There are no words. I know what he meant to Rebecca, Mat and the family. Mr Rice’s home was as familiar to me as my own and his presence larger than life. (He’ll always be Mr Rice to me - a good bloke and my best mate’s dad). Hiltingbury Court was a great place to become an adult; both welcoming and challenging. Mr Rice loved conversation and lively debate. He was quick-witted, well-informed, dry-humoured and fiercely proud of his children. He will be terribly missed by those close to him and extremely fondly remembered. The answer phone message from those years is seared into my memory from thousands of teenage phone calls. It seems only right that I sign off with the immortal words of the man himself; “Thanks……and goodbye”.
